McCoppin Square

Background

McCoppin Square Park serves one of the most densely populated communities in the City. Bounded by 22nd and 24th Avenues, between Santiago and Taraval Streets, the 8.29-acre park is surrounded mostly by single-family residences and light commercial buildings.

Families from the immediate areas comprise the majority of McCoppin Square users. Often visitors can be found enjoying the abundance of open space; strolling along the heavily forested waking paths; playing tennis; or playing on the slides, swings, and monkey bars at the playground. The park also offers a field that hosts both soccer and baseball.

Sunset District locals frequently enjoy the peaceful and safe recreation space provided by McCoppin Square Park.

Scope of Work

In 2008, the community voiced their care and concern for McCoppin Square in a vote that committed over $5 million of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond funding to the park’s renovation.

McCoppin Square

Our goals, driven by the vision of the local community, were to preserve and enhance the diversity of activities offered by the park; improve comfort, sociability, and aesthetic appeal; increase pedestrian flow; and ensure park safety. With these goals in mind, the project included:

  • Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA ) accessible pathways
  • A contemplative garden with seating
  • An improved baseball field with new bleachers
  • A new half basketball court and resurfaced tennis court
  • A new playground located close to the library and featuring both a Tot Lot and school-aged play areas
  • A new public restroom building

McCoppin Square is now able to serve its neighbors and visitors for generations to come.
