Sunset Playground
Completed and Open to the Public!
Background
Residents of the Sunset have enjoyed the recreational offerings of Sunset Playground since 1940. After years of use, the park was in need of repairs to its basic facilities, amenities, and landscape.
In response to these needs, we dedicated nearly $14 million of the 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond to ensure this local treasure will continue to promote good health and community togetherness through its recreational facilities.
Strong local voice contributed to the vision and direction for the new Sunset Playground. We worked hard to make this vision a reality, starting with upgrades to the recreation center and the children’s play areas. These spaces now provide the community with entirely new options for fun and physical activity.
In addition, we made improvements to the parks fields and courts, aiming to please the playgrounds more sports-minded visitors. We completed the package with the restoration of roads and pathways, upgrades to lighting and irrigation, and improvements to overall accessibility and park landscape, so that Sunset Playgrounds exterior now beautifully reflects its shiny new interior.
Sunset Playground offers nearly four-acres of recreation space to neighbors and visitors of the Sunset. It provides a large recreation center with:
- Bleachers
- Community rooms and a ping pong room
- A gymnasium
- Locker rooms
- Storage facilities
In addition to its indoor offerings, the park features:
- A baseball field
- A basketball court
- Children play areas
- A small community garden
- Two tennis courts
