Lake Merced Boat Dock Replacement Project

Completed and Open to the Public September 16, 2021!

Background

The purpose of the Project was to ensure the North Lake Merced boat dock’s continued operation as an important regional natural recreational resource for the community, to improve accessibility for the general public (particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities) and to avoid the displacement of the diverse user groups (particularly cultural/youth groups) that rely upon the well-established recreational and cultural opportunities that the North Lake Merced boat dock offers.

Scope of Work

The project scope was to remove the existing gangway and freeboard wooden dock that extends approximately 130 feet into Lake Merced and to replace these facilities with an updated gangway and (slightly larger) dock that complies with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. The existing 30 foot gangway exceeded the accessible slope making it hazardous for seniors and users with disabilities. The new 80 foot gangway and 140 foot dock allows for safe access to docked boats on either side of the new dock. Additional work included site and landscape work and the Installation of a new accessible parking stall and concrete path leading to the new dock, installation of one new light pole, and Installation of a new asphalt driveway.

Funding

This project was funded by the Rec and Park Open Space Fund and the 2012 Bond Project Community Opportunity Fund.

The construction contract award for this project was approved by Recreation and Parks Commission; Recreation and Parks Commission approved a contract amendment on April 28, 2023 ( PDF ). This construction contract award obtained and complies with all city, state, and federal regulatory approvals, including any that are specific to this project’s funding sources.
