Golden Gate Park - 9th & Lincoln Gateway

Completed and Opened to the public on November 1, 2024!

Scope of Work

This project focuses on improvements to the road and landscape on the north side of the intersection at 9 th Avenue and Lincoln Way, with a symmetrical design encompassing both the east and west sides of 9th Avenue. These improvements include:

• Approximately 5,500 square feet of new concrete paving and plaza space
• Distinctive trees and landscaping in approximately 6,000 square feet of new planting area with upgraded irrigation
• New signage, including a large engraved boulder
• Large stone planters
• Stone steps with handrails
• New pedestrian lighting
• Relocation of the MUNI bus shelter farther west
• New curb ramps at both corners of the intersection
• Electrical and utility upgrades

Background

The gateway at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way is one of the most well-used entrances to Golden Gate Park. Improvements to the gateway have long been a community priority and it was identified for a new entry treatment in the 1998 Golden Gate Park Master Plan.

The proposed gateway design will improve wayfinding and pedestrian safety for those arriving by foot, improve visibility of the park and botanical garden, and will serve to strengthen the connection between Golden Gate Park and the Inner Sunset. The materials selected for the new gateway ensure that it will be built to last for generations. New landscape improvements will create an iconic and welcoming arrival so that the entry experience will live up to its prominent location.

Funding

This project is funded through with revenue from the Open Space Fund and the General Fund:

• General Fund: $2,825,539
• Open Space Fund: $248,107
• Total funding: $3,073,646

The construction contract award for this project was approved by Recreation and Parks Commission on July 20, 2023 ( PDF ). This construction contract award obtained and complies with all city, state, and federal regulatory approvals, including any that are specific to this project’s funding sources.
