Mission Creek Park South Extension Project
Scope of Work
The Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII), along with the Mission Bay Development Group (MBDG), is responsible for the development of Mission Creek Park South extension project (Parcels 2 and 8). The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (Rec and Park) will own and operate the park upon completion and is engaged in the design and construction process to ensure Rec and Park requirements and best practices are followed.
Mission Creek Park Parcels P2 and P8 will complete the last link in a string of Mission Bay’s creekside open spaces. The project will expand existing bike and pedestrian routes, as the new park weaves its way under the existing I-280 highway, along Mission Bay Drive and Channel Street, enhancing neighborhood connections between Mission Bay and the Design District. The park’s shoreline is adjacent to the Mission Creek Harbor houseboat community, and its design builds upon the character of the current Mission Creek parks and gardens, with a robust maritime landscape, new informal gathering spaces, and an expanded community garden. Diverse native plantings, stormwater gardens, interpretive exhibits and new public art will provide expanded habitat and opportunities for the public to learn about and engage with this diverse estuary .
Background
As of July 1, 2023, Rec and Park assumed the management and maintenance of a unique collection of park spaces in the city’s Mission Bay neighborhood, including Mission Creek Park (North and South). Development in the Mission Bay North and South Project Areas began in 1998 under the jurisdiction of the former San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, which was succeeded by the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII).
Located west of Oracle Park, the completed portion of Mission Creek Park is an inviting promenade and open space lining the north and south banks of Mission Creek. OCII, in partnership with the Mission Bay master developer FOCIL (MBDG), and now Rec and Park as the operator of certain existing and future Mission Bay parks, oversee the design and implementation of parks within Mission Bay. This final segment of Mission Creek Park will provide 5.7 additional acres of new open space west of the Mission Creek Park Pavilion.
Funding
Design and construction of this project are fully funded through OCII.
