Mission Bay Future Parks Project
Scope of Work
The Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII), along with Mission Bay Development Group (MBDG), is responsible for the design and development of the future Mission Bay Parks. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (Rec and Park) is engaged in the design and construction process to ensure Rec and Park requirements and best practices are followed and will own and operate the parks upon completion.
The five open space parcels encompassing Mission Bay Commons, P7, and P9, will include a mix of active and passive programming.
Mission Bay Commons: Parcels P12, P13, and P15 at the Mission Bay Commons currently house Spark Social SF, Stagecoach Greens Mini Golf, Urban Sprouts Community Garden, and SFF soccer fields. Initially launched as interim uses, these programs have proven popular with the community and together have developed into an important social hub for Mission Bay. The forthcoming project includes a renovation of the three existing interim use parcels, to create a more visually cohesive and permanent environment that complements the other two previously completed ‘Commons’ blocks to the east (P16, P17), while also retaining many of the existing elements that have become community gathering spaces.
Future “Active Recreation” Parks: Parcels P7 & P9, which are located under the I-280 along Mission Bay Drive and Owens Street, are currently undeveloped and are anticipated to house several active uses including a skate park, pickleball courts, and a ballfield .
Background
As of July 1, 2023, Rec and Park assumed the management and maintenance of this unique collection of park spaces in Mission Bay. Development in the Mission Bay North and South Project Areas began in 1998 under the jurisdiction of the former San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, succeeded by OCII, which is now the agency leading the development of these Project Areas.
The Mission Bay community has seen the development of 30 acres of parks and open space and is preparing for the remaining parks to be developed. These are anticipated to be complete by 2028. Rec and Park, who is now responsible for operating certain existing and future Mission Bay parks, will be working in partnership with MBDG and OCII to oversee the design and implementation of the remaining parks to ensure Rec and Park requirements and best practices are followed. This includes the three westernmost parcels of the Mission Bay Commons (Parcels P12, P13, and P15) which currently house interim uses including two soccer fields, community garden, Spark Social, and Stagecoach Greens, and two undeveloped parcels under the I-280 (Parcels P7 & P9). These final open space parcels will complete the 41-acre open space complex for the Mission Bay neighborhood envisioned over two decades ago.
Funding
Design and construction of this project are fully funded through OCII.
