Background

On June 23, 2017, the park officially opened with a ceremony and celebration that featured everything from politicians to Mayan dancers.

In Chan Kaajal Park (Formerly 17th & Folsom Street Park) is the first new neighborhood park to be acquired and built by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) in over a decade. Planning for the park began in 2008 with the adoption of the Eastern Neighborhoods Rezoning and Area Plan. The public planning process for the development of the park concept plan was done in partnership with PODER, and other neighborhood organizations. The Recreation and Park Commission approved the conceptual plan for the 17th & Folsom Park Project at their meeting on June 21, 2012.

The project was on hold for a year, 2013, to allow for coordination with the proposed work by San Francisco Public Utilities Commission for 17th & Folsom Sewer Improvements that included a wet weather storage basin at the site of the future park. In early 2014, SFPUC decided not to proceed with the proposed sewer improvements work after evaluation of the project and technical performance of the storage basin. The project obtained additional funding to complete design and moved forward again by mid-2014. Construction documents were completed in July 2015 followed by the bid and award phase of the construction contract. Construction started in April 2016 for a duration of 10 months.

The park was officially named In Chan Kaajal Park on Thursday, July 20, 2016 when it was confirmed by the SF Rec and Park Commission.

Funding

The construction contract award for this project was approved by Recreation and Parks Commission on November 4, 2015 ( PDF ). This construction contract award obtained and complies with all city, state, and federal regulatory approvals, including any that are specific to this project’s funding sources.
