About this Facility
In 1996, the Recreation and Park Commission voted unanimously to rename Portola Playground and Recreation Center in honor of Sululagi Palega Jr., a Samoan American and local sports legend who was tragically killed in Modesto two years earlier. Described as a “Gentle Giant,” Palega grew up in the Portola District and was a regular visitor to the center, where he learned to play the sports that led him to become a local star at Balboa High School and later at City College of San Francisco. At the time of his death, Palega was in the process of being hired by the Recreation and Park Department as a recreation director. He is remembered today as a community leader and icon for recreation and sports in San Francisco.
Visit this thriving community center for a wide selection of games, sports, programs, and classes, including after-school activities for children. Join a pickup game on the basketball court or soccer field, or take your pup for a run. The large, inviting playground features climbing structures bordered by beautiful trees. Tennis courts, athletic fields, and picnic areas are also available.
