Key Takeaways
Caution: Watch the north side at low tide. Sand conditions near the north entrance side continue to shift with tide movement. Take extra precautions when water levels are low.
Dredging Work Progress: Dredging has removed 19,800 cubic yards of sediment from the waterway entrance sea floor to date. This process has increased depth and improved navigation safety. Depths improved after recent work (6/8–6/9) in parts of the entrance channel. Each dredge helps. After each dredge, contractors require several days to transport and dispose of sediment at an offsite quarry.
Next scheduled dredge: June 21
If operations start earlier, advance notice will be provided.
Welcome to San Francisco Marina Small Craft Harbor. The San Francisco Marina, as it is also known, is a destination sought by thousands of boaters from all over the world. The oldest recreational marina operating in San Francisco, and perhaps the Greater Bay Area, the harbor has had vessels berthed in its original basin, now known as the West Harbor, since before the 1906 earthquake. The original marina was expanded in the mid-1960s and is now approximately 35 acres. The entire facility has 727 berths, including 15 end ties for guest berthing vessels up to 90 feet LOA, free pump-out stations and a commercial fuel dock. San Francisco Marina also features a large and popular park, Marina Green, which is home to many events including Escape From Alcatraz and Fleet Week. Marina Green also has several “par course” workout stations along its perimeter.

Dredging Operations at West Entry Channel (Updated June 8, 2026)
Thank you for your continued patience as the city’s new dredging contractor (Dutra) makes progress on the Marina entrance channel. The next phase of the Marina dredging project will use larger equipment, which Dutra will bring up from Long Beach. The larger equipment will remove sand and sediment at about three times faster than the current equipment and will help speed up the project completion and restore full channel access.
Dutra has informed the city that due to unforeseen issues, this equipment will arrive on June 18. While this means a temporary pause in visible dredging activity, waiting for the larger dredge remains the quickest and most effective way to complete the project.
Schedule
- June 8-9: Active dredging with the equipment currently operating in the Marina.
- June 10-11: Off-haul of dredged material.
- June 18: Larger dredging equipment arrives and active dredging resumes.
- Early July – project complete
To date, approximately 16,700 cubic yards of material have been removed from the entrance channel. Once the larger equipment arrives, Dutra expects to remove the remaining 20,000+ cubic yards and complete the project by early July.
The channel entrance remains navigable. Please note that daily tidal changes continue to shift the sandbar. Boaters are encouraged to use caution when transiting the channel, particularly at low tide. Daily soundings and project updates will continue as dredging progresses.
What Boaters Should Know
Transit Requirements (Active Dredging Zone):
- Contact dredge crew 15 minutes before transit
- Monitor and hail on VHF 13, 14, or 80
- Do not pass without clearance from the dredge operator
Dredging equipment uses submerged cables that must be moved for safe passage - advance notice is required.
