Alemany Farm
Address
700 Alemany Boulevard San Francisco, CA 94110
The largest urban farm in San Francisco, Alemany Farm offers everyone the chance to learn where their food comes from, pitch in to help, and take home fresh produce for free! Come get your hands dirty with us!
Alemany Farm at St. Mary’s Complex is a 3.5-acre site, located on Alemany Boulevard near Ellsworth Street. This food security farm is managed under the Recreation and Park Department’s Community Gardens Program. Alemany Farm is one of RPD’s most popular spaces to volunteer and has been recognized for successes in promoting urban agriculture through communal efforts where all volunteer grow all the food and plants together, to share with each other and their neighbors. Along with helping meet critical food security needs for our community members, the farm provides deep dive educational opportunities in ecological agriculture, beekeeping, pollinator and habitat gardening, for both youth and adult learners.
General volunteer workdays are Monday and Saturday afternoons. If you are an individual and want to sign up to join a standing workday, visit our nonprofit partner’s website, Friends of Alemany Farm .
If you would like to set up a group or corporate workday, email communityGardens@sfgov.org .
In addition to agriculture workdays, Alemany Farm offers the following volunteer opportunities onsite:
Alemany Natives Plant Group
The goals of the Alemany Natives group are to expand the native habitat restoration zones within the Farm and to educate the community on how local native plants can be used to benefit food cultivation, for home landscaping, and for cultivating habitat for birds, bees, insects and other species. Volunteer activities include planting, weeding, pruning and monitoring of native plants in various locations around the Farm. Click here to register for a Alemany Natives volunteer day.
Medicinal Herb Garden
The Medicine Garden at Alemany Farm cultivates over 60 varieties of medicinal plants, culinary herbs and edible flowers. It is maintained by a small group of volunteers who believe in the accessibility of herbal medicine for urban people. The Medicine Garden is located near the willow tree on the west side of the farm, at the foot of the southern slope of the hill. For more information, reach out to Bonnie Rose Weaver brw.herbalist at gmail dot com with any questions.
Pond Landscaping
The pond landscaping group takes care of the central water feature of Alemany Farm by removing invasive aquatic species and fostering native flora and fauna. Please check out Alemany Farm’s website to see when the next public workday will take place.
The Alemany Farm Management Plan guides site use. This plan was approved by the Rec and Park Commission in August 2012.
